Biography of

Ne-Yo

b. Shaffer Chimere Smith, 18 October 1982, Camden, Arkansas, USA. This R&B singer-songwriter began his music career in the late 90s as a songwriter, co-writing material for an impressive number of artists including Mary J. Blige, B2K, Faith Evans, Jamie Foxx, Rihanna and Tyrese. His most notable success was as co-author of Mario’s 2004 chart-topper ‘Let Me Love You’. During this period he also signed a solo contract with Columbia Records, but despite recording a number of tracks for the label nothing was ever released. Despite this chastening experience he was persuaded to sign a new contract with Def Jam Records. At this time he also adopted his recording moniker, which was partially derived from the Neo character in the blockbuster Matrix movies. Ne-Yo worked on new tracks with producers including Norwegian team Stargate and Ron Feemstar. His second stab at a solo career was markedly more successful than the first, with his debut album In My Own Words debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200 at the start of 2006, and the beautiful, melodic single ‘So Sick’ topping both the US and UK singles charts. The second single to be released from the album, ‘When You’re Mad’, was a major hit in the summer.
