A US indie pop band formed in Huntington Beach, California in 2001 by students Forrest Kline (guitar/vocals) and Jesse Kurvink (keyboards). The duo began writing and recording songs in Kline’s bedroom, and after adopting their band moniker (usually written hellogoodbye) began posting the results on the Internet. A loyal fanbase quickly sprang up which, via a series of home produced CD-Rs, helped spread the band’s music to a wider audience. Aaron Flora (drums) and Marcus Cole (bass) joined Kline and Kurvink as hellogoodbye began working the live circuit. The quartet’s goofy stage presence and muscular power pop quickly established them as a strong live draw, and support slots and festival appearances followed.
At the start of 2004, hellogoodbye signed a recording contract with the California-based independent Drive-Thru Records. Kline recorded five of the six tracks on their self-titled debut EP on his own, with Kurvink adding vocals to his ‘Jesse Buy Nothing … Go To Prom Anyways’. Chris Profeta replaced Flora in the line-up before the EP’s official release at the end of 2004 (although by this point it had already registered over 250, 000 download sales). The band’s profile was raised considerably the following year owing to their appearance on the MTV documentary series The Real World: Austin. Later in 2005, hellogoodbye released a DVD featuring their music videos and a concert filmed at the House Of Blues in Anaheim. Their debut album Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! reached the US charts in summer 2006, a feat that ultimately owed more to their sizeable online following than the qualities of the band’s endearingly geeky brand of melodic power pop. The single ‘Here (In Your Arms)’ also enjoyed success on the US chart.
