Biography of

Boys Like Girls

Formed in 2005 by Martin Johnson (vocals/guitar), Paul DiGiovanni, (guitar), Bryan Donahue (bass), and John Keefe (drums), this Boston, Massachusetts-based indie rock act rose rapidly through the ranks of their contemporaries to establish themselves as one of America’s most eagerly supported new bands. The quartet had all played around Massachusetts with other hopeful bands, including Lancaster and the Drive, but it was only when they joined together as Boys Like Girls that their fortunes began to improve. By the end of 2005 the buzz around the band had risen to fever pitch, owing mainly to their Internet presence on the PureVolume website. A contract with the Columbia Records subsidiary Red Ink followed at the start of 2006, with the quartet embarking on a short tour with Cute Is What We Aim For shortly afterwards. They also toured with Butch Walker while working on their debut album. Released in August, the self-titled collection was an enthusiastic and melodic collection of emo-tinged indie rock. However, despite all the initial hype the album revealed Boys Like Girls to be little different from many similarly-styled acts.
